A cyst excision is a surgical procedure to remove a cyst from the skin. Without surgical treatment, the cyst may grow larger. When indicated, the removed cyst is then sent to the laboratory for examination.

Preparation for Cyst Excision
The surgeon first applies or injects a local anesthesia, depending on the location and type of cyst to be removed. It is not necessary to avoid eating before this procedure. The cyst excision can be performed in the outpatient clinic and patients can go home after the procedure.   
  • Place a plaster over the stitches and follow the instructions given at the hospital until the dressing and sutures are removed after approximately 7-10 days.
  • Quick shower is permitted if the dressing is waterproof.
  • Avoid swimming or taking a long bath for 1 week of until the stitches are removed.
  • Swelling, redness or warmth at the wound site
  • Pain or discharge from the wound
  • Accidental Splitting or opening of the wound
  • Fever

Every surgical procedure carries risks and complications such as the following:

  • Fluid flows along the stitches
  • Scar tissue tightens or forms during the healing process
  • The edges of the wound are not even or the wound margin is elevated above the surrounding tissue, resulting in a scar
  • A keloid scar may form; the color may change; the patient may experience some pain
