ReLEx SMILE

Laser Eye Surgery that Does Not Require a Scalpel

Take the next step with ReLEx (Refractive Lenticule Extraction) SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction), a surgical technique for correcting short sightedness and astigmatism. Through the utilization of a new generation of laser that is targeted through a tiny incision in the cornea (2-4mm), the nerves in the upper cornea are not disturbed, thus decreasing the chances of dry eye syndrome.

With ReLEx SMILE, patients are able to see clearer right away, and with only a short recovery time are able to quickly return to their normal activities.

Treating Eye Disorders with the Femtosecond Laser: the Vision Solution Technology that Utilizes LASIK

Currently, there has been an increase in safety standards associated with the lifting of the optical flap by utilizing a Femtosecond Laser instead of a scalpel, thus ensuring high levels of surgical accuracy. With regard to the steps involved in correcting vision by adjusting the corneal surface, the Excimer Laser enables LASIK to be used with high safety and efficiency.

Furthermore, Bumrungrad International Hospital has a team of internationally trained specialists on hand to provide treatments that utilize the latest equipment in order to accurately and effectively correct eye disorders. You can be confident that the quality of treatment offered is delivered in accordance with internationally recognized standards.

A common question: who’s suitable for eye disorder treatments? The answer is anyone over the age of 20 with a stable vision rating for at least 1 year, as well as those who meet the below criteria:

  • Those who have undertaken an eye test with an ophthalmologist who determined their eyes to be healthy and strong.
  • Those who no longer want to wear glasses or contact lenses.
  • Those who do not suffer from any other eye conditions that affect vision, such as severe dry eye syndrome or macular degeneration.
  • Those who do not suffer from conditions that may affect the body’s ability to heal wounds, including diabetics who have difficulty controlling their blood sugar levels, or anyone suffering from rheumatoid conditions.
  • Those who are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Those who have stopped taking Isotretinoin acne medications (Roaccutane, Acnotin, Isotret) for at least 6 weeks prior to their surgical procedure and at least 1 day prior to their eye exam.

  • Computer assessment of the patient’s refractive error
  • Visual acuity test
  • Eye pressure assessment
  • Evaluation and measurement of the patient’s refractive error by an ophthalmologist
  • Assessment of tear volume
  • Cornea thickness assessment
  • Administration of eye drops to enlarge the retina
  • Detailed assessment of the retina by an ophthalmologist
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes or forcefully blinking for the first 2 weeks.
  • Wear eye shields when sleeping for the first 3 nights.
  • Be careful not to allow fluids to enter your eyes (other than eye drops) for the week following treatment.
  • Administer eye drops for as long as your doctor has advised.
  • Try not to strain your eyes for long periods of time, for example, when reading or using a computer.
  • Don’t miss your doctor’s appointments.
Am I eligible for treatment with VISX-STAR S4?
Yes, if you:
  • are over 20 years old;
  • are not pregnant or breast feeding;
  • are free from corneal/retinal and connective tissue disease, glaucoma and severe dry eye;
  • suffer from near-sightedness of 1.5 to 12 diopters;
  • suffer from astigmatism of 1.0 to 6.0 diopter; or
  • suffer from far-sightedness (hyperopia) of +1.5 to +6.0 diopters.

Can I do both eyes at the same time?
  • Both eyes can be done at the same time, however your ophthalmologist may recommend treating each eye separately, depending on your individual circumstances.

Does it hurt?
  • There are no sutures or injections and only anesthetic eye drops are required. Typically, you may experience mild irritation for the first 24 hours after surgery.

How long does it take?
  • LASIK is an outpatient procedure that takes about 15-20 minutes per eye. Most patients go home without eye gauze, but a transparent eye-shield is provided for maximum safety. The majority of patients can see well within 24 hours, with the full benefits being realized within 1 to 2 weeks.

Is it safe?
  • LASIK is a well-established, world-class method for refractive correction. By 2009, more than 6,500 procedures had been successfully completed at Bumrungrad International, with thousands performed every year. Complications are rare and will be discussed by your doctor. Additional safety is assured by performing the surgery in a sterile operating theater environment.

What is the success rate?
  • Statistically, patients experience a 95% vision correction.
