The Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Bumrungrad Hospital is managed by the Section of Critical Care Medicine to provide 24-hour care for patients with various life-threatening conditions. Supported by the latest medical technology and equipment, our coordinated ICU team of experienced critical care specialists, qualified nurses, and select medical specialists work in close cooperation to provide fast and efficient diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of each patient’s critical condition.

Bumrungrad Critical Care Unit, or ICU, is committed to improving critically ill patients' treatment quality to achieve world-class standards. Furthermore, we emphasize transparency by disclosing the outcome of our treatment.

Our ICU has monitored the severity of patients using the APACHE IV score, a wildly accepted medical scoring system. A higher score indicates more severe illness. ICU at Bumrungrad Hospital APACHE IV is 54.27 on average, close to the US average of 54.5.

The Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR) is the ratio between the actual mortality rate in the ICU at Bumrungrad Hospital, compared to the average based on studies in patients with the same severity. A lower value than one indicates a low mortality rate, which reflects the effectiveness of treatment. If higher than one means that the mortality rate is higher than average and improvement is needed. The SMR of ICU at Bumrungrad Hospital is 0.38

The Critical Care Unit at Bumrungrad Hospital provides specialized treatments for patients in various critical conditions:

  • Intensive Care Unit 1 (ICU) or Medical ICU: With a total of 12 beds, ICU 1 provides expert care for conditions such as:
    • Patients with severe infectious diseases and septic shock
    • Patients with liver transplants
    • Patients with burn injuries
    • Critical condition patients with various organ dysfunction or failure like of the kidney or liver or acute gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Intensive Care Unit 2 (ICU 2) or Surgical, Neurological or Neurosurgical ICU: With a total of 15 beds, ICU 2 provides expert care for:
    • Critical condition patients with neurological disorders, particularly stroke
    • Coma patients
    • Immediate post-operative patients requiring continual observation and frequent monitoring
  • Intensive Care Unit 3 (ICU 3) or Pediatric and Obstetric ICU: With a total of 9 beds, ICU 3 provides professional care for:
    • Critical pediatric patients aged between 1 month and 15 years requiring respiratory treatment and/or using ventilators and requiring close observation
    • Obstetric patients
  • Intensive Care Unit 4 (ICU 4) or Respiratory ICU: With a total of 18 beds, ICU 4 provides expert care for:
    • Critical patients with respiratory conditions and/or using ventilators

    ICU 4 is a newly established unit. With 4 rooms that include family area, relaxation corner and private toilet for patients’ carers, ICU 4 is used only at the discretion of the doctor to treat patients in highly specific critical conditions. In order to maintain a safe environment for patients, ICU 4 is designed with environment control features that include smart equipment and furniture, day/night lighting, an ante-room to prevent the escape of contaminated air, and the use of positive and negative pressure to prevent infection.

  • Coronary Care Unit (CCU): With a total of 14 beds, CCU offers expert care, medication and surgery under the management of the Heart Center for child and adult patients in a critical condition caused by heart disease or heart attack

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Bumrungrad Hospital is staffed by doctors and medical professionals in a variety of related fields working together to develop a safe treatment plan and ensure the best possible result for each patient.

  • Our team of specialists is comprised of:
    • Critical care specialists who have undergone special training in critical care medicine in the U.S – all 6 of our critical care specialists at the Intensive Care Unit are certified by the American Board of Critical Care Medicine and are on hand to provide treatment for patients in critical conditions 24 hours a day.
    • Specialists in the following areas of medicine who work together with the critical care specialists to develop treatment plans and provide treatment for patients in critical conditions 24 hours a day:
      • Neurological specialists
      • Respiratory specialists
      • Gastrointestinal specialists
      • Infectious disease specialists
      • Heart disease specialists
      • Kidney disease specialists
      • Surgeons in all areas
  • Our nursing team is comprised of nurses with special training in the following areas of critical patient care:
    • Nurses specialized in providing care for critical condition patients
    • Nurses specialized in providing care for patients with respiratory conditions; nurses who have undergone training in specific respiratory condition treatments, such as oxygen therapy and the use of ventilators.
    • Nurses specialized in using a variety of medical devices to provide effective patient care
    • Nurses with training in advanced life support
    • Respiratory care nurses
  • Other medical professionals
    • Critical pharmacists who work together with critical physicians to coordinate patient care, including medication use, dosage adjustments, prevention of medication problems and undesirable symptoms, and response to medication reactions during treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.
    • Respiratory therapists
    • Physical therapists
    • Speech therapists
    • Nutritionists
    • Palliative care specialists
    • Clinical nurse coordinators, including neurology, heart, etc.
 
  • Professional treatment and monitoring of critical condition patients: Our ICU team is fully qualified and experienced in the monitoring and treatment of patients in critical condition. We regularly perform a variety of emergency medical procedures, including the use of life saving ventilators and defibrillators as well as invasive blood pressure monitoring using arterial catheters or the provision of hemodialysis.
  • Inter-hospital critical care transfers: In order to plan, prepare for and ensure a smooth transfer, our critical care specialists coordinate with and advise the doctors in our Medical Coordination Office as well as doctors in the Emergency Room and Medical Escort doctors. Our critical care team assesses each case and evaluates the safety and benefits as well as the availability of beds, staff and the needed equipment.
