Risk stratification to avoid serious conditions associated with Allopurinol induced  Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) / Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN ).

The absence of this allele reduces, but does not eliminate, the risk for the development of a drug-associated severe cutaneous adverse reaction (SCAR) when treated with allopurinol. Clinical vigilance whenever allopurinol therapy is administered is essential and allopurinol therapy should be discontinued immediately and permanently if a drug-associated cutaneous adverse reaction develops.
