Specimen / Container (สิ่งส่งตรวจ/ภาชนะ):
Fresh tissue should be approximately  at least 3 cm in length.Wrap the fresh tissue in saline moistened gauze (not floating in saline) in sterile container and keep it cool with cold packs or wet ice (not in direct contact) and be brought immediately to surgical pathology. 
*Please notify Surgical Pathology Department (Tel. 14146 or 14144) when planning to submit tissue for muscle biopsy at least 1 day.

Useful For (ประโยชน์การทดสอบ):
For evaluation of certain hereditary, autoimmune/inflammatory, infectious, and amyloid neuropathies. Establishing a diagnosis can allow specific treatment to be given. In a portion of cases, the findings are nonspecific or reflect changes seen in an end stage nerve, and a precise diagnosis may not be made even after a biopsy.

Clinical Information (ข้อมูลทางคลินิก):
The doctor may request a nerve biopsy if you’re experiencing numbness, pain, or weakness in your extremities. You might experience these symptoms in your fingers or toes.
A nerve biopsy can help your doctor determine whether your symptoms are caused by:
1. damage to the myelin sheath, which covers the nerves
2. damage to the small nerves
3. destruction of the axon, the fiber-like extensions of the nerve cell that help carry signals
4. neuropathies
Numerous conditions and nerve dysfunctions can affect your nerves. Your doctor may order a nerve biopsy if they believe you may have one of the conditions. For example ; alcoholic neuropathy,
axillary nerve dysfunction.
