Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction is a condition where patients cannot voluntarily control the contraction or relaxation of their pelvic floor muscles. These muscles act like a supportive sheet controlling pelvic organs, such as urination, bowel movements, and in women, vaginal functions during intercourse. Dysfunction causes improper muscle relaxation, leading to difficulty in urination or defecation.

Causes
While the exact cause is unclear, the condition is associated with several risk factors:
  • Vaginal childbirth
  • Pelvic trauma
  • Obesity
  • History of pelvic surgery
  • Nerve or spinal cord injuries
Patients may experience a variety of symptoms, including:
  • Urinary symptoms: Incontinence or difficulty urinating
  • Bowel symptoms: Difficulty or incomplete defecation
  • Back pain
  • Pain or tension in pelvic muscles
  • Pain during intercourse (in women)
The goal is to enable normal elimination and regain control over pelvic floor muscles. Treatment options include:
  1. Pelvic Floor Exercises
    • Exercises like Kegel can strengthen muscles and improve symptoms.
  2. Other Therapies
    • Pelvic floor muscle training with Biofeedback
    • Muscle relaxant medications
    • Bowel retraining
    • Stretching exercises, such as yoga
    • Surgery (if necessary)
