Rectal prolapse

Rectal prolapse is a condition where the rectum, the final section of the large intestine, slips and protrudes through the anus. This condition can significantly impact quality of life and requires proper diagnosis and treatment.

Causes of Rectal Prolapse
  • Nerve damage from natural childbirth, prolonged labor, or pelvic surgeries
  • Weak anal sphincter, often due to aging
  • Chronic constipation
  • Women over 50 years of age or those who have undergone hysterectomy
  • Feeling or noticing a lump near the anus
  • A sensation of sitting on a ball
  • A red protrusion that may retract on its own or be manually pushed back
  • Prolapse during bowel movements or daily activities such as walking or exercising
  • Severe cases may cause incontinence or bleeding
Rectal prolapse involves the slipping of the rectum, whereas hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus. If you're unsure of your condition, consult a doctor for proper diagnosis.

  • Observation: For mild cases
  • Surgery:
    • Abdominal surgery (open or laparoscopic)
    • Surgery via the anus (for high-risk patients)
The choice of treatment depends on medical assessment.
Although complete prevention is not possible, risk can be reduced by:
  • Avoiding constipation
  • Eating enough fruits and vegetables
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Regular exercise
