The influenza vaccine strains vary each year, with recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) of the influenza virus strains in the vaccine composition. For the Southern hemisphere (SH) 2025 vaccine, the WHO recommends one different flu vaccine strain in the composition from that in the Northern hemisphere 2024-2025 (NH 2024-2025) flu vaccine as shown below:

Why is the flu vaccine important?
After vaccination, it takes about two weeks for the body to build immunity. Its effectiveness in preventing the flu ranges from 40-60%. Those having been vaccinated can still get the flu, but the severity of the illness as well as risk of death from complications can be reduced.
Who should get the flu vaccine?
It is recommended that everyone should get the flu vaccine every year, particularly those people who are at higher risk of developing serious flu complications including individuals aged 65 and older and those with chronic diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, kidney failure, and diabetes.
When should we get the flu vaccine?
It is advisable to get a flu vaccine before the rainy season starts (in May) or before the winter starts (in October), which is the beginning of the influenza season, or at least 2 weeks before traveling to an area with an outbreak.
Two types of flu vaccine available at the hospital:
1, For people in general
“New! 2025 quadrivalent flu vaccine for the Southern Hemisphere”
2025 Flu Vaccine, new strains
2. For seniors aged 65 and over
The high-dose quadrivalent flu vaccine is designed to protect against 4 strains of influenza viruses more effectively for seniors aged 65 and over, as they are at higher risk of severe complications from influenza.
