GEN Z HEALTH TIPS

Gen Z (age 24 and under) are young adults or those on the cusp of adulthood. At this age, it's the time for fun and future plans. But Gen Zers should also pay attention to their health, taking good care of themselves to prevent diseases, so they can live long and strong. While Gen Zers may have fewer health concerns than other generations, they can face certain health issues due to stress from various environmental and lifestyle factors.

Technology-Induced Health Problems

Gen Z is the first generation to be called “digital natives” as they grew up with the widespread use of the internet and technology. Technological advancements have both positive and negative effects on Gen Zers. While technology provides them with easy access to knowledge and information, prolonged use of electronic devices can cause Gen Zers to develop many health issues including eye fatigue, dry eyes, rounded shoulders, carpal tunnel inflammation, tinnitus, and hearing loss from prolonged exposure to loud noises, such as from headphones.

Mental Health Issues Due To Environmental Factors

A survey by the American Psychological Association found that Gen Zers have higher levels of stress and anxiety than any other age group. Factors include feelings of isolation resulting from too much screen time, excessive consumption of negative news, economic challenges and the pandemic, which have affected their learning and socializing experience.

Health Problems Due To Lifestyle

While Gen Z may place more importance on working out for health than other generations, they are also more likely to have unhealthy eating habits such as consuming fast food. The more frequent the consumption, the higher the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease. Additionally, research studies on sleep in the UK and the US have found that only 35% of Gen Zerssleep more than 7 hours per night due to too much screen time as well as various types of anxiety.

Most Gen Zers realize it’s important to take care of their health. However, it is necessary that they make some adjustments to their lifestyle, be aware of health risks, and plan for early disease prevention. The following can help reduce the likelihood of developing health problems in the future.

✔️ Balanced Use Of Technology

Recommended habits are digital detoxification, reducing the use of electronic devices, turning to other activities such as meeting with friends face-to-face, exercising, spending time in nature, and meditating. This can help reduce stress and anxiety. Stopping screen-related activities at least one hour before bed can also help you sleep better while protecting your eyes and your ears from excessive use.

✔️ Mental Health Care

While Gen Zers are found to be more accepting and open about mental health problems than any other age group, they are less likely to seek help. Learning to manage stress and anxiety and to seek help from family and professionals can help reduce the risk of developing depression.

✔️ Lifestyle Behavior Adjustments

While Gen Zers know it’s good to have nutritious foods and many choose to eat less meat, they may still love sweets and snacks. It's better to choose a diet complete with the five major food groups. It's also good to get enough sleep, at least 7-9 hours a day. Those with chronic insomnia should consult a doctor and get a physical examination, and treatment if required.

✔️ Early Disease Prevention

This can be achieved in several ways. Start with an annual physical examination. Undergoing genetic testing is also useful in finding out about the risk of diseases. Genetic testing can help with the early prevention of diseases, as well as let you be aware of potential drug allergies.
