Blalock-Taussig Shunt
Blalock-Taussig shunt (BT shunt) is a procedure that creates an artificial shunt between the aorta and pulmonary artery to increase blood flow to the lungs. It is a palliative surgery used for congenital cyanotic heart disease (bluish discoloration of the skin) with diminished pulmonary blood flow. This condition consists of oxygen-poor blood being pumped to the body, resulting in bluish skin. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath and rapid breathing, poor weight gain, and irritability. This procedure is temporarily used to direct blood flow to the lungs and relieve cyanosis while the child is waiting for corrective surgery. A Blalock-Taussig shunt can improve the child’s health and quality of life.
