Gold Fiducial Marker Placement under Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Gold Fiducial Marker Placement is the method to locate prostate gland position for radiation therapy of prostate cancer patients.

Purpose/Benefits of the procedure
Gold fiducial marker placement helps with accurate radiation therapy for prostate cancer patient. The procedure is recommended for moderate to low risk prostate cancer.
 
Patients are required to make an appointment with radiation therapy nurses in order to:
  1. Refer to medicine doctor for physical assessment before the procedure.
  2. Please avoid food and drink at least 8 hours before the procedure.
  1. Meet with the anesthesiologist who will explain to you about the preparation process.
  2. Anesthesiologist will be administering sedation.
  3. The procedure is done using ultrasound machine.
  1. Nurses will be assessing the patient before transferring to recovery room for observation.
  2. Patients will be receiving the information about what could be expected such as excessive perineum bleeding which the patient must see the doctor.
  3. Patient can go home when the condition is stable and no unusual symptoms shown.
There is no limitation either before or after the procedure.
 
The procedure is performed accurately under the ultrasound machine to check the exact location.
 
What if this procedure is not performed?
You will not be a candidate for image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT).
 
Other treatment that is not image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) but using seed implantation.
