Organ and tissue transplant

Organ and tissue transplant at Bumrungrad

Organ transplant is a procedure where a viable organ is removed from a donor to replace the malfunctioning or damaged organ in a recipient due to a disease or an accident which cannot be treated or when other treatment methods have proved ineffective.

Organ transplant is a second chance to have a better life for patients with terminal illnesses. In addition to prolonging the patient’s life, it also improves their quality of life with a new, healthy organ, allowing them to live a normal life and reducing long-term medical expenses.

Bumrungrad is the first private hospital that can transplant all the three organs and one tissue: “heart, liver, kidney, and cornea”. This is due to the readiness and collaboration of a multidisciplinary team of expert specialists in various fields with over 37 years of experience in organ transplant, resulting a high success rate comparable to international standards.

Two sources of organs for transplants:

1.Organs from brain-dead donors through the Thai Red Cross Organ Donation Center
2.Organs from blood relatives or spouse

Instructions for Thai nationals:

Organ recipient registration

From the Thai Red Cross Organ Donation Center

From a living donor

1. Patients will be assessed for their physical and mental readiness before receiving an organ transplant.

1. The donor must be related to the recipient in one of the following ways:

• Being a blood relative such as father or mother, child, siblings born from the same parents or siblings from different fathers or mothers, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, or cousins (proven by legal evidence and medical evidence using the human leucocyte antigen (HLA) and/or DNA testing)
• Being a spouse, a legal wife or husband of the recipient, having been registered as a married couple for no less than 3 years or having lived together as husband and wife openly up to the day of the organ transplant surgery for no less than 3 years; if they have a child together, the 3-year marriage requirement can be exempted with the child’s DNA testing confirm the spouses’ relationship.

2. Patients take care of themselves, getting prepared for a transplant while waiting for a donated organ. If treated regularly at a different hospital, patients are requested to bring treatment results and other test results when visiting the hospital to see a doctor and notify him of changes in symptoms and treatments.

2. The patient will be assessed for both physical and mental readiness before receiving an organ transplant surgery. In this case, the patient and the donor must have a document certifying the relationship by a forensic doctor, and approval must be granted by the hospital's organ transplant subcommittee for the organ transplant from a living donor.

Requirements include documents certifying a blood relationship or a genetic relationship between the donor and the recipient as proved by medical testing of HLA or DNA, for example. Otherwise, the donor and the recipient have been legally married for at least three years, or have lived openly as husband and wife with the organ recipient for at least three years. If they have a child together, the 3-year marriage requirement can be exempted. If there’s any issue, HLA or DNA testing can be used as proof.

Alternately, certification can be sought from the respective embassy or agency responsible for the operations of persons of the recipient's nationality, to verify the genetic relationship by HLA or DNA testing as medical evidence or any other means of proving considered of comparable reliability by a government medical institution in Thailand.
